Me Made May ’14: a four country extravaganza!

I’ve never participated in Me Made May before – last year this time I barely had enough homemade clothes to get me through a week, let alone a month! So I was excited to participate this year, until I realized I would be away for over 2 weeks on my epic cycling adventure… Then I reminded myself: it’s not a competition. You don’t have to be perfect even if your type A-ness WANTS TO WIN IT ALL. So I decided to embrace the spirit of things, and wear as much home made clothing as I could – even while traveling through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam! Here’s how I did:
Clockwise from top left: Loving my new silk Dove T, which got multiple outings; stripy Renfrew;  Parisienne wrap dress; stripy Moneta
All time favourite wrap dress (and I just found the same material to make another! hurray!); stripy Renfrew making an appearance again; new Tilly & The Buttons Coco topTofino PJs with Liberty jersey.

Dove T making an appearance at Grey’s Fabrics Crafty Foxes sewing club (spot the celebrity bloggers!); Moneta Maxi mark 1; stripy Renfrew v 2tropical wrap dress.

And finally, on hols! I took a few things that I thought would suit the climate and be fairly suitcase resistant, which proved to be true except in the case of the silk Dove T. Observe: Moneta Maxi mark 2; maxi skirt and purple jersey Renfrew; turquoise dotty Sorbetto (unblogged); Dove T.
Fun! So it seems like I managed to wear me-made clothes for at least 16 days, and there were definitely other days which didn’t get photographed. What have I learned?
– Most of my me-made clothes are really wearable, daily garments. Yay! I guess that’s why I’m hosting the Everyday Casual topic for Sewing Indie Month (just a few days to enter your garments, folks!)
– I really do love knits, and cute woven tops are my essential basic in summer.
– I am obsessed with the Colette Moneta. I already have at least another 2 planned, plus a maternity one for a friend….
– I don’t really have anything warm… I could do with making some cardigans
– I have no handmade trousers at all. However! I am going to rectify this soon as I’ll be attending the Workroom Social pants workshop in NYC with no less than Lauren from Lladybird in August! Totally psyched to have strangers stare at my crotch all weekend and hopefully come away with a perfectly fitting pair of pants!
Did you enjoy MMM’14 this year? It was fantastic to see it getting some media attention in the UK – when you take a step back and think about it, isn’t it phenomenal that so many of us have a whole wardrobe of homemade clothing? If you’d told me I would 5 years ago I never would have believed you. Luckily, there’s still plenty of space in my cupboards for more….

  1. Very stylish indeed! I too identified a cardi gap in my MM wardrobe and did a roundup of patterns that floated my boat here:

  2. A great achievement, I am in awe of all your home made clothes….maybe should travel this path too. But at this stage I am too petrified.

GO FOR IT LADY! I mean, it’s not like you have a lot to do, running a teashop and all 🙂

Who did you ride through Asia with? Impressive!

My friend Nina and I went with the company Exodus – there were 4 of us in total. It was great!

Gorgeous!!! I especially love your moneta maxi – I was thinking about getting this pattern and this version has sold me on it!
