French sailor tap shorts (confused yet?!)

Ever since I spied this ridiculously amazing Robert Kaufmann anchor chambray at Grey’s, I knew a second pair of Katy & Laney Tap shorts would be mine. And then, as if by magic, Sarah Grey generously gave me some and so it was fated to happen.
Flush with courage from my first fly fronts (to be shown shortly), I decided to try View C, which is a more traditional short style with faced pockets and a fly front. They came with me on the family summer vacation to Provence:

Not pictured: the billions of bees buzzing all around me in the lavender!

This time around, I added 1.5 inches to the waistband – while the size 20 waistband was fine when I was standing up, I do somewhat… expand.. when I sit down, so that extra 1.5 inches makes all the difference comfort-wise. I adjusted the yoke accordingly but did forget to change the pockets, hence there’s a little bit of pulling at the pocket joins… oh well, you live and learn.

Lovely as the chambray is, it’s pretty light and my last pair made from upholstery fabric seemed to benefit a lot from the weight. So, I also underlined this pair with a midweight blue cotton from the stash – it worked really well, giving the fabric a bit more body and reducing the wrinkles from sitting down all day.

My fly isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely passable. Just means I’ll have to make more pairs..

Special thanks to photographer Tom who valiantly persevered through taking hundreds of photos of his sister’s pelvic area, and by the end was a dab hand at “just pull the left hand side down a bit, there’s a wrinkle!” and “turn a little bit that way! no the other way! slightly more!”. I feel I am teaching him essential life skills.

So, yet another pair of stylish and eminently wearable shorts for the summer wardrobe. I have a funny feeling they won’t be the last. Have you made your Katy & Laney tap shorts yet, dear readers? What patterns are your summer staples?

Jenny – these are stunning! I really need to order this pattern (and find more time). You are totally rocking these and your brother did a wonderful job with the photo shoot. g

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks! It’s totally worth getting the pattern – I’ve loved both versions I’ve made, and they’re just the right proportions on my body

Heeheehee… what a good brother! I can’t imagine either of my brothers having the patience or kindness to do that. 🙂 These are majorly cute! Love the little anchors! I’ve been so unorganized and have had a weirdly stressful summer, so haven’t had a chance to make these yet, but I’m really desperate to try them! They’re first on the list after I get back from vacation. 🙂 Thanks for all the inspiration!

He’s a good’un! It took him a few minutes to get over the awkwardness but then he was totally game… Watch out for the next post in which he features more prominently 🙂 Sorry to hear your summer is stressful – what a bummer – but hopefully you can get some relaxing sewing done soon…

EEEEE!!!!! These pictures are SO beautiful. Yay that the underlining worked out because the fabric is perfect. Can’t wait to hear more about your trip.

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks! It was hard to get wrinkle-free photos with the midday sun but we managed 🙂 The underlining was fab – also makes them look mucho profesh on the inside…

I’m so jealous of that fabric it’s sold out everywhere!!! I’m loving the shorts though, they’re perfect for summer.

    1. Erika A says:

Oh crap thanks! Off I go

  5. Gorgeous shorts! Great idea with the underlining. I have a couple fabrics I think would be really cute as tap shorts, but I fear they are too thin to hold up on their own.

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks Michelle! The underlining worked well, and as a plus it makes the inside look super fancy 🙂

Provence! How dreamy! What part were you in? Your lovely shorts look right at home in that field of lavender.

We were at a villa in the Luberon valley, near Saignon. It was lovely! Back to Boston now…

Love those shorts and this must be the best background ever. The fit looks great and I haven’t had a pair of shorts which fit for years, maybe I’ll have a go.

Hi Mags – when we were driving past them on the first day I was like I MUST TAKE PHOTOS IN THOSE FIELDS! I feel like I see everything through the lens of potential blog photoshoot locations now 😉 You should give the shorts a go – they’re definitely short, but the high waisted pattern makes me feel really secure and covered-up.

    Great fit and nice shorts!

  11. I bought the pattern yesterday and plan on assembling it today! I have some bottom-weight echino polka-dot linen that I plan on making up in view A. I really want to do the fly-front, but I don’t think my skills are quite there yet…

    1. Jenny says:

Woo hoo! I will say that the fly front instructions are really good, so it’s worth giving it a true, but if you have precious fabric, I’d also do the easier ones first 🙂

  12. What cute shorts! Love the print and the shorts look great on you. The pictures are beautiful too. I am working on my first pair of tap shorts and cannot wait to finish!

Great outfit! Flattering and so fashionable on you!! You taught us about successful shorts and your brother gained a new life skill.
I am in the sweltering 100℉ Texas heat. Our swaying wild flowers will soon be brittle and brown…
So enjoy the landscape and flowers of Provence! Thanks so much for posting your make and sharing your vacation!

  14. I have never found a pair of shorts that look flattering on someone over a certain size, these look fantastic! I definitely think I’ll need to add them to the wish list
