I was very excited to make this dress! I made my usual mods - lengthen bodice and grade out waist one size. However., after applying the elastic to the neckline, the bodice didn't fit at all. It rode up and was unusable. I salvaged the dress by making the Washington top instead, and that turned out very well. I think I'd make this dress again , but make the top the same way as the Dartmouth top, which fits me very well.
I love the Alcott dress. It´s a fun sew, clever construction of the front bodice and I feel gorgeous in them. Yes, I made 2 right away, and more to come...
The Alcott is my first Cashmerette pattern. And I must say it was a true joy working with this pattern – the instructions were easy to follow, and the fit is great! I made a 24 E/F with ¾ sleeves, and added the pockets from the Turner dress hack.
I've made two versions of the Alcott Dress and I love it so much! The flutter sleeves are graceful and interesting without being over-the-top. The defined waist gives me an hourglass and the skirt skims beautifully over my build without showing my belly. Plus, best of all, as I shout from the rooftops: NO FBA NEEDED! I hope to add plenty more to my wardrobe.
As always with Cashmerette, the pattern is beautifully drafted, true to size and the instructions are great. It was an easy sew and I was so excited to try my new dress on. But it just didn’t suit me. I’m not sure why. I’m top heavy (kinda carrot shaped I suppose) and I chose a dark plain fabric for the bodice and a lighter patterned fabric for the skirt, like various online style guides recommend, but it just wasn’t flattering on me. It looks great on my friend who’s pear-shaped though so I gave the dress to her.
