Rockwell Vintage Dress
Sew a vintage-style gown with the Rockwell Dress! The Rockwell is inspired by the groundbreaking creations of fashion designer Claire McCardell in the late 1940s. The Rockwell has a tightly gathered neckline with front tie and slit and is gathered under the bust with a waist tie that wraps around the torso. Top it off with a coordinating cover-up, the Caroll Shrug.
The Rockwell Dress has three different views:
View A has a contrasting neckband and waist tie
View B is color-blocked
View C is made from a single fabric
Each view can be made as either a maxi length or a midi length dress and the versatile waist ties can be tied in numerous different ways to create many different looks.
The Rockwell Dress is a Cashmerette Club x Julie Eilber collaboration.

This was a satisfying make, that has just enough drama for summer events. It was easy to make and I liked the simple, yet elegant finishes.
I made a few little adjustments, so it would fit me better: raised the neckline and widened the shoulder with handstitching.
The only two things, that did not turn out great on me were:
- the bustline: eventhough I made a muslin and raised the bust line according to my measurement, it still ended up too low in the front, so I have to play with it when I put it on to hide it behind the ties in my waist. And eventhough the bustline is supposed to be in a curve, it appeared wonky on the sides as it was higher there in the front, but couldn't hide it behind the ties.
- I was very much looking forward to tying the ties in the back around my body but not the dress for the "ultimate" dramatic effect as shown in one of the promo pictures. Unfortunately that does not look good to me on my body. I realise that has nothing to do with the patterrn, it just took some of my excitement out of it.
Otherwise recommend it and would love to make another one!
Sewing the Rockwell was a pleasure! I chose this pattern because I was looking for something with a bit of wow factor to wear to an arts gala, and this pattern really helped me achieve the arty/glamour vibe I was going for. The directions indicate that it's a suitable project for an Advanced Beginner and that was definitely true for me. I made a size 3 maxi in View A which took me about 2.5 days to complete, and the straightforward steps and detailed illustrations ensured that I got where I needed to go through every aspect of the construction. I'm so pleased with the overall experience and result that I've ordered the Carol Shrug pattern and will make a complimentary coverup next because I intend to wear my Rockwell to future events; two weddings next spring, and beyond!
What I loved about this dress is there was minimal fitting required. I made this Rockwell - Caroll combination for my cousin (pictured) for an awards ceremony. While we are mostly the same size, all the fitting required was for an accurate position of the under bust belt. The neckline was fiddly but not hard with some patience. I used an Ultra Luxe Silken Fabric 95% polyester and 5% elastane in a print called turtle but looks like tassels to me.
It took me a long time to decide on the purchase because I'm a Brazilian woman. This means that, generally, the patters designed by non-Latin companies do not always look good in my body (not without many, many adjustments) which is very similar to the stereotype of the Latin woman, small waist in relation to the hip, large breasts, big arse. After MANY patterns of other brands - which I have always had to adjust a lot - behold not only this, but ALL the patters of Cashmerette is perfect, almost without any adjustment. I was seduced by the Rockwell dress (so glamorous), but today I'm a fan of Cashmerette. It is wonderful the respectful attitude of the company towards all types of bodies. But in practical terms: very well constructed pattern, I make them without major adjustments, the PDF printing options are wonderful (print only the parts we will use and not all sheets), clear instructions, didactic videos. As I said: it's a case of passion :)
