I have perfected the fit for my body with this pattern. I have made several and I love them all. The instructions are easy to follow. I am a big fan of Cashmerette !!
I've made quite a few button down shirts over the years, and Cashmerette's patterns (both this one and Vernon) are hands down my favorite — even with no adjustments, my first Harrison fit better than anything I've previously made or found in a shop. I have to make more, because I can no longer stand all the gaping buttons and bunching underarms on the shirts still lingering in my closet.
I did find I needed to raise the armscye quite a bit — this is a very common pattern adjustment for me and I'm surprised not to find it among any of the adjustment tutorials on this wonderful site. If anyone out there has the "arms can't move" problem where the sleeve is pulling at the biceps when the arms are raised, this is usually the adjustment that needs to happen. I made a second shirt with this adjustment and it fits much better. It was a bit awkward to do with the three front pieces, but absolutely worth it. I also found the neckline is cut oddly high in the front, but not enough that I've bothered to alter anything.
Between this one and Vernon, I think I slightly prefer Vernon, especially if you want to do anything that would want pattern matching. Vernon is also better for French seams, which I prefer, versus Harrison's princess seams really want to be either flat felled or overlocked. But this is still an excellent shirt. If you're a C cup or above, this is eons better than any of the big name patterns out there.
Finally a shirt that fits me. And the pattern is written so well, following it was a breeze. I'm extremely happy with this purchase.
I didn't high hopes for this pattern because of all my failures in the past with other patterns. The size calculator told me my bust should be 18, waist 28 and hips 30 so I set out to grading and hoped for the best but expected the worst. I made my toile and didn't let myself get too excited, but noticed it looked pretty good. When I tried it on I was amazed and so happy with the results. It was almost perfect and all I feel i need to do is grade up a little in the waist, because I like a looser fit. I will also lengthen it a little bit, but that is personal preference. I see so many possibilities for this pattern and I want to thank you Cashmerette.
I bought the paper pattern many moons ago and used it so much it was in a raggedy state. I repurchased the pdf version and I’m so happy I did.
The instructions booklet now includes the high bust measurement making it even easier to choose the starting size, particularly as my measurements have fluctuated over the years.
I’m currently sewing a new shirt in a 12GH bust grading to 14 at waist and hips
I posted this review on FB initially, but wanted to copy/paste it here. I'm sewing the Harrison shirt now. I just finished the muslin this weekend and I cannot remember the last time I've worn a button down that both fit my body AND didn't gap. Either I have to pin them closed or they're bags on me. Even better, the muslin is nearly a perfect fit! I just need to shorten the sleeves and take in the sides a bit, especially over my hips as my curves are minimal there. As someone new to the hobby (been sewing less than 6 months!), I found the instructions very easy to follow (the trickiest bits were the bottom hems of the button placket as I misunderstood initially where to sew and how fiddly the cuffs were). I cannot wait to sew this out of my chosen fabric and wear it.
