You should know basic sewing skills like straight seams, hems, and following pattern instructions. This book focuses on fitting rather than fundamental sewing techniques - if you're a complete beginner, start with "Sewing the Curve" first.
This book includes 5 fitting-focused patterns in sizes 12-32 and cup sizes C-H: Honeybourne Dress, Foxhill Dress, Stanway T-Shirt, Kersoe Top, and Magna Pants. Each is used to demonstrate specific fitting techniques in the book's "Fit Clinics."
"Ahead of the Curve" is the first fitting guide created specifically for curvy and plus-size bodies. Instead of trying to adapt techniques meant for straight-size bodies, you'll learn methods that actually work for your curves, demonstrated on bodies like yours.
Absolutely! The fitting techniques you'll learn apply to any pattern. The book's patterns are tools to teach you skills you'll use forever: once you master these adjustments, you can fit any pattern to your unique body shape.
The book patterns come in sizes 12-32 (US) and cup sizes C-H. The printed patterns are included in the back of the book in an envelope. They are printed on both sides, so must be traced before using. The PDF digital downloads are available from our website—see the information in the book on how to access them.
I'm working my way through this book and really enjoying. I am appreciating the need to slow down and make mockup versions of garments which is not just important for fitting, but also building my confidence in the various techniques that I will need for the final garments. So far I have made the Stanway tshirt, the foxhill dress with not one but two toiles, and the same with the kersoe top. I have consulted the fitting guides for each garment which is really helping me understand the pattern construction. A thououghly enjoyable book that is building my confidence in a big way :)
I first borrowed the book at the library and knew I found the perfect website to use and the book has been helpful for fitting patterns. I am enjoying sewing for myself once again.
I have read it front to back and it is amazingly written. It got me excited to have an even better fit than I’ve had before. I pulled out the patterns and looked them over but haven’t tried yet, there are a few project dresses in from of the one I want to try. I have made 2 other dresses from Cashmerette patterns and it was not hard to get a wonderful fit. Thank you for great offerings.
I've been sewing for YEARS!!! This book clearly explains adjusting patterns, in a positive way that addresses special fitting needs. I've used this book repeatedly - both to learn more about Cashmerette patterns, and to work with big box patterns I've previously purchased. Thank you for sharing your insights!
MelRae in Tx, y'all
The book covers a variety of topics perfect for anybody who just does not have "the average" body, whataver that might mean to you. To me it means bigger breasts, a broader back, narrow shoulders and long arms, which basically means that I have never worn a proper fitting shirt or blouse in my entire adult life.
With this book I have learned to make a broad back adjustment, narrow shoulder adjustment, full breast adjustment and thus made my very first really good fitting dress.
It is well written, easy to understand even if you have no background in sewing whatsoever and the way Jenny writes about a fat body is just so refreshing!
It's not all "love your body" and I like that because, at least for me, that just does not work. I do not always like my body. But I do feel that whether I like my body or not, I deserve nice clothes that do not add to the dislike. My body deserves to be covered by clothes that are perfect for my body and this book will help immensely whit archieving that.
As a sewing instructor I have recommended Ahead of the Curve to students as a go to reference. In fact the shop where I teach started a meet up for folks who are using the book so we can help them get the most out of it. It is amazing to see people who have spent years struggling to find clothes that fit suddenly get that perfect drape. The instructions are clear, the patterns are beautifully drafted and the results are amazing.
