Wedding Upton

When my granddaughter ask me to make her wedding gown I immediately thought of the Upton. I showed the brides photos of the gowns they had created. The Upton is the style she wanted.
I ordered the pdf. and had it printed in large format. I then traced off the pattern pieces needed.
The pattern instructions are clear and the the pattern "reads" well also - all marking are clear and the pieces fit together as they should. My granddaughter is the tall one in the family; at 5'6" I did not need to make adjustments except to take it in a bit in the waist. I am 5' and I make lots of petite adjustments. Working with the pattern for the gown I see how these adjustments will work for me. I am plannning an Upton or two for myself.
Great pattern Cashmerette!

Great Pattern!

The Upton dress was so fun to make! And this was my first garment other than a quilt coat (I’m a quilter usually). The instructions were easy to follow and thorough. I used Jenny’s Full Bust Adjustment technique from an online class and it helped my dress bodice (princess seams) to fit like a dream. The pleated skirt gave perfect volume and balance to accentuate my waist. I wore my Upton to my cousin’s wedding and received a lot of compliments. It was fun to blow people’s minds by saying, “Thanks! I made it!”

Don’t forget to check the finished measurements!

I’ve bought almost all the Cashmerette patterns at this point, and the release of the truly impressive Expansion Pack meant it was time to try the famous Upton!

I titled my review as a reminder to check the finished measurements because I’d become so used to Cashmerette fitting me with minimal alterations (Alcott, Dartmouth, Concord, and Montrose!) that I completely forgot the fabulously fitted Upton has less ease than the others! In retrospect, I’ve been skating by with the 14 G/H in all the other patterns, but my 39” high bust and 46” full bust means I should definitely be grading sizes.

Luckily I had already planned to make an unlined top with rouleau ties instead of a zipper, so I just added button bands (with the method from the fantastic Cashmerette Shirtmaking course!) to make up for the extra 2” I needed at my widest point.

The variety of pattern pieces in the Expansion Pack also made it very easy to draft my own lantern sleeve based off the one shared by Camilla Morrison: I made the shorter flutter sleeve symmetrical and drafted the semicircle middle of the sleeve accordingly.

I will definitely be revisiting this pattern and all of its variations...with the knowledge that I need to adapt for my true measurements!
