Caroll Shrug
Sew a vintage-style cover-up with the Caroll Shrug! The Caroll is inspired by the groundbreaking creations of fashion designer Claire McCardell in the late 1940s. The Caroll is a simple, bias cut cover-up that can be sewn in just about any fabric—woven or knit. This versatile pattern can be made in a single fabric or color blocked and can be made either lined or as a single layer. The Caroll is designed to pair with the Rockwell Dress, but looks fabulous over any dress or top.
The Caroll Shrug is a Cashmerette Club x Julie Eilber collaboration.

Having just finished my first attempt at a Cashmerette pattern (the Upton Skirt), for my next garment I wanted to make something where I didn't have to worry too much about the fit. The Carrol Shrug fitted the bill and having lots navy sheeting fabric lying around I decided to use this. I was undecided about lengthening the shrug as it seemed a little short in the body to me, but went with the pattern as it was for my first attempt.
I was correct, I should have lengthened the pattern so did this (by 3 inches) and made another one from the same fabric. This fitted much better and felt much more comfortable to wear - it's not the fault of the pattern that my sheeting fabric had quite a lot of structure and so didn't drape as well as I'd hoped. Personally I'd go for a much more drapey fabric next time (and there will be a next time) and can see myself getting a lot of use out of the garment.
I loved sewing the shrug pattern and as a beginner I was delighted with the level of support from Cashmerette with the couple of queries I've had in my sewing experience with them so far. I learnt so much on this project and now need to decide which of the patterns to make next.
I made my cousin (pictured) the Rockwell - Caroll combination outfit for an awards ceremony. The unlined shrug is made from taffeta, I used French seams and topstitched them down so I wouldn’t have to line it. The Caroll was a super quick make I completed in an afternoon. A great pattern to whip up a matching shrug for an event outfit!
